Well, that's simply not true. The US may have a majority Christian population, but is not, and never was, a "Christian nation." The founding fathers made that quite explicit. (Interestingly, the "Christian nations," i.e. those with an official state church, tend to be much less religious than the US.)
That's like a former student of mine who tried to say that the Pledge of Allegiance, with the phrase "under God," proved that this had always been a Christian nation - that phrase was added when my parents were in school! They both remember saying it before the addition. GAH.
